Joel Whitburn's Top Pop Singles 1955-1996 states that Crash's first recording was done for the Colonial label out of Chapel Hill, N.C. While "Birddoggin'/Millionaire" on Colonial 721 is a great rockabilly classic, it is not his first. Crash's hometown of Greensboro, N.C. had, as most cities did, a few "hot spots" for the teenagers to gather. One of these was the Sky Castle drive-in restaurant. (The actual name was McClures Sky Castle, but everyone just called it the Sky Castle.) It got it's name from the glass enclosed room on top of the building, making it look like a control tower at an airport. From this room a local DJ would spin records and send them in glorious "AM" to all of Greensboro. Best of all, you could request your favorite song while sitting there in your car munching on a hamburger. The Sky Castle was a very well known name in Greensboro and this record is on "Sky Castle" records, with a Greensboro address on the label. There is no record number on the label, but it has Columbia's production numbers ZTSP 26671 and 26672. It has a white label with green print, and has the artist listed as "Billy Graddock", with a "G". It'll be 50 years (quite a milestone for a marriage much less a singer) this summer since "SMACKY MOUTH" hit the airwaves. Com'on CRASH take a copy of this 45 to the studio to have mastered and re-released to celebrate this event.. Gregg
